This is what (sometimes) happens when you randomly take books from the library because you’re trying to break your same old/same old habits. Surprise!
Stop Aging Start Living promotes proactive aging – aging with vibrancy. It offers strategies that inspire health, energy and vitality that create an age-less beauty.

Be Advised – Chemistry is not my strength so this is the micro version of body ph.
The book supports the idea that to achieve optimum health body ph should be slightly more alkaline than acid. A body ph that that has high acidity creates an environment where disease thrives. A body ph that is slightly more alkaline is disease resistant. To create an internal ph that is slightly more alkaline we work with what goes into us. The ideal diet is ¾’s alkalinizing foods and 1/4 acid forming.
There are lots of tables online that will tell you which foods are which but generally plant based foods are alkaline. There are a couple of links below if you want to explore further.
This kind of approach to health (and beauty) makes sense to me.
I’m going for what the book calls The Kick Start. The ¾ alkaline/¼ acid food combo is definitely challenging so for now I’m aiming to become more knowledgeable about the foods I eat.
Here’s how I’m incorporating the Kick Start:
Start the day with an alkalinizing cocktail… fresh green juice (ie kale, celery, cucumber, beet greens, ginger) mixed with a scoop or two of a fibre supplement (many of these are a combination of psyllium and ground flax). If you don’t have a juicer use a green’s powder (all health food/grocery stores stock). I’ve used Greens + by Genuine Health for years. I’m sure there are lots of good ones.
Drink lots of water flavoured with fresh lemon juice (alkalinizing) throughout the day.
Take a liver tonic daily (all health food/grocery stores stock)– it supports liver detoxification and usually contains milk thistle, dandelion, turmeric and other herbs.
Take 2 spirulina capsules daily(all health food/grocery stores stock) – it’s a blue green algae rich source of amino acids, B complex vitamins, and a whole host of other good things. It is exceptionally alkalinizing. *Get the capsules the powder tastes terrible.
Take 1 calcium/magnesium supplement daily
Soak in a warm bath with 2 cups baking soda and 2 cups sea salt for 20 – 30 minutes. It makes an alkalinizing spa by drawing the acids out of the body thru the skin. Rinse off in shower. Pat dry and apply body lotion or oil to combat the dryness from the bath.
I’ve been drinking my own version of a morning cocktail for about 5 years and (honestly) I think it does put roses in my cheeks! The rest including the bath is new to me.
I’m excited to give it a go!

The book I mentioned above is Stop Aging, Start Living and written by Jeannette Graf MD. I have 2 other books on the topic that I think are particularly good – The ph Miracle by Robert O. Young PhD and Shelley Redford Young and The Beauty Detox Solution by Kimberly Snyder C.N.
