Aaaahhhhh Joy! Who doesn’t want more of this lovely feeling in their life?
The women I talk to say what they most long for is more joy.
So…let’s make it happen!
Something I’ve learned over the years is that real joy doesn’t come from the big things like accomplishments it comes from the heart tickling feeling found in the small things and in the conscious choices we make. It’s subtle, soft moments that fill our hearts and bodies.
While we can’t ‘chase’ joy there are some things we can do to provide a cozy place where joy wants to put down her roots. Interestingly they are all free or rather…..priceless.
1. Impromptu detours
Get off the beaten path. Take a new route. I’m often awe struck by what I’m ‘seeing’ for the first time. A smile creeps out onto my face and I feel the little tickles inside.
2. Smell the flowers
Stop and really look at these tiny beautiful things. Some of them have faces can you see? You’re sure to smile.
3. Dance in the kitchen on the patio…..anywhere
Turn on happy music that makes you want to move… old Beach boys…Spice Girls (my workout class used to play Spice girls and we’d all immediately start smiling, moving, laughing its just happy music)…Pharrell Williams Happy (always does the trick).
4. Change your screen savers
Maybe it’s a photo of a loved one or a place that evokes wonderful memories. Change it up.
5. Journal your gratitude
Expressing gratitude creates more to be grateful for. Remembering all the little moments brings gentle floods of joy. If you missed this…catch it here.
6. Have a picnic
Pull out a blanket, grab some yummy finger food and go. It’s a happy thing…slowing down….being in the fresh air. Take friends or go alone, either way it’s lovely.
7. Go for a walk
Whether its early in the morning, during the day or a night time stroll being outside will rejuvenate and put a smile on your face.
8. Reorganize
Your wallet, Your closet. Your purse. Your fridge. Your garage. Your home. Making things orderly allows you to take a deep breath. Aaahhhhh. There’s a reason for the new ‘verb’…Marie Kondo-ing!
9. Get in touch with someone you’ve been thinking about
People pop into our minds over and over and we think ..I should get in touch. Do it. Chances are they’ve been thinking about you too.
10. Watch a sunrise or a sunset
Mother Nature’s great light shows.
11. Pay it forward
One of the greatest ways we can fill ourselves up is to give what we have away.
12. Take a bath
Add lavender epsom salt…..light a candle…turn on soft meditative music. You’re tickling your insides not to mention the corners of your mouth are doing a flip.
13. Sit under a tree
Just do it. You’ll see….
14. Smile at a stranger
Always spikes the joy meter.
15. Hold a hug a little longer
This is the best …. it’s like a day at the spa.
16. Choose joy every day
Spend a moment each morning thinking about how you want to feel and write it down. That thought becomes top of mind and the (very clever) unconscious then looks for ways to make it concrete. Try It. Today I choose…Joy.
Remember joy is found in the little moments.
A joyful mindset can be en-joyed by everyone.
It’s how we view at the world. The lens we look through.
Put on your joy glasses to see the tiny, beautiful, joyful things.
How do you find joy?
