Red Shoe Zone style expert Micolle Canido shares her take on Fall 2015 and encourages YUMMY Agers to think of fashion as FUN and to keep it playful!
Cheryl: You can always spot the women who are having fun with style..they’re SMILING! Remembering back —that’s what the red shoes encouraged me to do–play! It’s funny when we have fun in one part of our lives it has a way of seeping into other areas and giving us permission to take more risks. Journalist Cintra Wilson (former Critical Shopping columnist at the New York TImes) recently published a book called Fear & Clothing. In it she says, “to change your presentation is to force the evolution of your character–to shape your insides and give your future self a jump start, buy new boots you think are too exciting for you, and make your personality grow into them.”
Thanks for the reminder Micolle…got some ‘growing’ to do!
Micolle: I’ve always been a fashion magazine hoarder as far as I can remember but over the last few years I have made a conscious effort to…save a few trees…put a complete stop to all my subscriptions and cave into my fashion magazine weakness by tapping into the digital world. BUT come Fall (“layering season” my favourite time of year) I allow myself to pick up some big, fat fashion magazines and indulge into what I like to call my “fashion porn”!
As a style influencer, I’m not necessarily looking for the next “big” fashion trend…I’m looking for inspiration and articles of clothing that can easily be incorporated into everyday street-wear for women everywhere. I encourage women to aim for pieces that have lasting power and carry a sense of chicness…My philosophy with fashion is simple…have fun, be playful, buy quality over quantity…and don’t take it too seriously. I feel you can’t break the rules anymore when it comes to fashion because there are no rules when it comes to self-expression.
Meet Lorelei (left). I literally stopped her in her tracks on the streets of Vancouver, Canada last week because not only did I recognize the skirt she was wearing but she spoke to everything I try and share with women on a day to day basis. At 55, she is having fun, being playful and owning it from head to toe!
This season try a pair of high-waist wide pants, culottes, or carrot pants like I did. The key is to play with proportion correctly. Being 5’2” and having more of an hourglass figure, I found a pair of carrot pants (high-waist, wide on top and narrow towards the bottom) that flattered my hips and gave the illusion of lengthening my legs…always a perk for me!
So go on…flirt a little with falls sumptuous fabrics, textures and cuts in alluring dimensions…whether it bares a little leather or lace, bohemian luxury, or layers on a romantic notion…there is no doubt something inspiring for everyone.
A few of my fall must haves…detachable faux fur collar, it adds texture and warmth . Nudes are still going strong and a boiled wool vest is a great layering piece . High-waist black denim jeans and a hat to complete the look. (all pictured at top)
