Judie Wilson is the go-to fitness guru for hundreds of women. Her philosophy not only strengthens the body but unleashes what she calls ‘the inner sexy’ creating legions of faithful YUMMIES.
Cheryl: I hear from women who want to become more active but don’t know where or how to start. What’s the best way to begin?
JUDIE: For starters, get out and take a walk. Even if time is hard to find, prioritize. Step out and move freely. Stand tall, take deep breaths in and out, find a little hill that you can power up.
Our bodies are meant to move. Perhaps you have a buddy to walk with. Just the process of getting moving will make it easier to stay motivated and to try something different. Enjoy your journey of moving more. You’ll feel fantastic.
Cheryl: Yoga is so popular. Is yoga (by itself) enough to be a full fitness regime? Can it build bones, work cardio, strengthen muscles and core and develop flexibility? If not, how to create a balanced plan?
JUDIE: I like the idea of variety when it comes to a fitness regime. Yoga is a wonderful staple with obvious benefits including flexibility and full body resistance to build muscles for strong bones . Certain types of yoga can get the heart rate up but not for as long as it needs to be for cardio benefits. I love the idea of combining yoga, Pilates and full body resistance exercises that we do at The Dailey Method. Because we isolate muscle groups like the thighs and seat and work them to fatigue, there is a cardio benefit as well as a core strengthening component. In 1 hour the entire body is worked, it is incredibly efficient. I also love indoor cycling. Keep mixing it up and you won’t get bored.
Cheryl: How we hold ourselves can make us look and feel longer and leaner…not to mention more confident, sexy and ageless. How can we improve our posture? It’s got to be more than the old ‘shoulders back’ our mothers used to say!
JUDIE: Proper posture is all about proper alignment.Try standing with you feet hip distance apart and rooting down through all 4 corners of both feet, now turn your inner thighs inward towards the wall behind you creating space between your sitz bones , shift rib cage back over hips, draw shoulders to ears with your breath in and on your exhale do an outer rotation of your upper arms, widen your collar bones and shift your ears back over shoulders.
Now, take another breath, and feel your rib cage expand and on the exhale use the muscles under your armpits to pull your shoulders together and down your back. Remember that your body should be in a proper plum line with ears over shoulders , shoulders over rib cage, rib cage over hips and hips over ankles. Practice standing in proper alignment daily and you will quickly notice how much taller you are standing and how much more confident and sexy you feel.
Thanks Judie. Path to discovering Yummie self —just start–begin the process with small steps—throw in variety—and get on your way!
