“I’ve figured out I don’t like aging…I’m afraid of becoming invisible.”
My mouth dropped open. These words had just been spoken by one of my most vital, curious, full-of-life friends…a completely ageless woman. Well…that’s how I saw her. Unfortunately she didn’t share my view (not for the moment anyway) hers was shaky and vulnerable.
“You have such a youthful spirit! You’re always seeking knowledge and understanding. You take risks and always carve your own path. YOU will never be invisible!” I countered.
She nodded deep in thought not hearing a word. I could see the fear in her eyes.
I think we all get to a point (for most of us it’s sometime in our 50’s) when we start searching for meaning and purpose. We want our lives to count. We want to use our accumulated wisdom to be a contributor.. We want to keep growing. We want our voices to be heard.
The question is…how? The world has become so big and complex. Things become redundant almost as soon as they are introduced. How is it possible to keep up with this?? But maybe the answer is not in keeping pace but in slowing down. Simplifying and taking the time to get know ourselves – who we are now, today. Then we can re-launch with renewed passion and purpose as confident, vital women fully visible to ourselves and the world.
As for my friend, she’s become a little introspective, gone to a quiet place dabbling with a few new ideas. Here her fear will dissipate and she will re-emerge as a strong visible force to be reckoned with.
I can clearly see her greatest contributions are yet to be made.
Two of the most read posts from last year were both on this topic. I thought they were worth repeating.
Take a peek.
